I don't know how I came across this, but here it is. The world's most remote inhabited Island is Tristan da Conha. The island is located in the South Atlantic, it has about 270 British residents, all land is held by the community, and settlers are not welcome. I think one would have to like this island whether one is an individualist (because so few people are around) or a communitarian (you would know everyone!)
- it takes about a week to get to the island from the nearest port (and there is no airport)
- island's major export is postage stamps
- 2009 has been an excellent year for tourism on the island (which has no hotels) with 9 ships landing
- island has free health care (but only one doctor)
- only seven last names are shared by the island's inhabitants
- they've had TV since 2001 (although only one channel is available)
