Is it better to be cold than lukewarm?

I was just thinking about this. It is clear that it is best to be 'on fire' for Christ. But is it true that the second best is being 'cold' and not 'lukewarm'? Is it better to be cold than lukewarm?
I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Any thoughts?

  1. Some scholars have read this passage within a cultural context in which cold and hot water are both good but lukewarm water is a sign of potential infestation, so if they're correct, "fire" here doesn't mean passionate about the things of God per se, just of positive use.
