US External Debt
Nice dynamic chart of the evolution of the US external debt.
Very interesting that the Pacific Rim countries hold such a large percentage of the U.S. debt, Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong hold more than half of the Treasury Securities? Mark Denzin - DBU
I found it interesting that the UK fluctuated so much. I thought that China and Japan would hold most of it, but I also thought that our oil suppliers would hold more as well. Melissa Edmonston- DBU
I also expected to see a bigger piece of the pie under "Oil Exporters" but what surprised me the most was the initial chart reflecting Japan as holding roughly 50% in 2002 and then beginning to decrease by more than 1/2 of that by 2005 or, conversely, that China held a relatively small portion until 2005 and increased their share to more than 30% by 2009, which made China the largest foreign holder of US external debt at that time (2009). This seems like a huge change in a relatively short period of time. I wonder what the chart would reflect now, almost a year later? Sherry Silcox - DBU
